The Granary Nursery School is situated in rural surroundings on a working farm on the outskirts of Framlingham. The buildings have been converted from an original granary to consist of 2 main rooms (each with its own cloakroom) a ‘quiet room’ and a kitchen from which the Nursery Cook produces excellent home cooked lunches. Both classrooms have access to large outdoor play areas allowing the teaching and learning to continue outdoors as well as indoors. The interior has been carefully designed with the children’s needs in mind with appropriate sized toilets and basins and coat pegs and book bag storage at child height, to encourage independence.
A car park at the front of the building allows parents/carers to drop off and collect children as safely as possible. We are also within walking distance of Framlingham town centre.
As well as both classrooms opening out into secure outdoor play areas, we also have access to the farmyard and extensive woodlands all year round. The children really can witness what happens on a working farm from season to season and often replicate this in their own play.
Within our outdoor areas, we offer a wide range of equipment and toys for the children to use freely. The ride on toys, such as tractors and trailers are very popular with the children and these and other wheeled toys often play a central role in imaginative play, whilst simultaneously helping to develop their gross and fine motor skills across the board.
The children plant and harvest vegetables from the designated vegetable plot and these are used in our Nursery home cooked lunches. All snacks and meals are prepared on site and the Nursery cook works hard to develop a healthy and balanced menu across each week. Children with particular dietary requirements are catered for. The children all come together for lunch and sit with an adult on each table. This is a lovely time to share news and reflect on the morning’s activities. We also encourage positive behaviour at the table – good manners and use of cutlery. Please see our sample menus for further information.
The nursery has been registered by OFSTED, to accommodate 24 children in Butterfly class and up to 16 in Caterpillar class per session. At each session we have an average staffing ratio of 1:5. Staff are encouraging, focusing on the positive aspects of behaviour. They are well qualified and continually update their thinking through current training and through reflective practice.
